What Is a Gamepad Tester?

A gamepad tester is a page or app that shows, in real time, what your controller reports to the computer. Every press, stick position and trigger value appears as it happens.

It answers a simple question quickly: is the problem the controller, or the game? If a button lights up here but not in a game, the fault is in the game settings or the mapping.

An online tester needs no driver. Modern browsers read controllers through the W3C Gamepad API, and Chrome or Edge can open extra PlayStation features through WebHID.

  • Confirms dead or sticky buttons
  • Measures stick drift and range
  • Checks analog trigger travel
  • Fires each rumble motor

Supported Gamepads and Controllers

If your operating system recognises a device as a game controller, the browser can read it. These are the pads people test most often.

PS5 DualSense

Buttons, sticks and triggers work everywhere. Chrome and Edge add the touchpad, light bar, gyro and battery.

PS4 DualShock 4

Same checks as the DualSense, including touchpad and motion. Worn sticks and a sticky L2 spring are its classic faults.

Xbox Series X|S

USB-C, Bluetooth or the Wireless Adapter. The tester also covers the Share button and impulse-trigger motors.

Xbox One & Elite

Early Xbox One pads need USB or the adapter; later ones add Bluetooth. Elite paddles show as their mapped buttons.

Switch Pro

Pair over Bluetooth or use a cable. Nintendo swaps A/B and X/Y compared with Xbox labels.

Joy-Con

A pair can appear as one combined pad or two single ones, depending on browser and system.

8BitDo & generic pads

Use X-input mode on Windows for the standard layout. Budget USB pads often report raw mapping.

PS3 & classic pads

DualShock 3, GameCube and N64 pads need a driver or USB adapter, and usually report raw mapping.

Racing wheels

Steering angle, pedal travel and shifter buttons, with axis assignment and inversion.

Flight sticks & arcade

HOTAS axes and POV hats in the joystick tester, levers and SOCD in the fight stick tester.

Gamepad Tester Features and Testing Tools

The tester at the top is the hub. Each deeper check has its own focused page with measurements you can compare later.

Real-time button detection

Every button is read each frame, 60 to 250 times a second. Analog buttons report their exact value, not just on or off.

Open tool

Stick drift and deadzone

A five-second rest test measures offset and noise, then recommends the smallest deadzone that hides it.

Open tool

Analog trigger travel

Watch L2/R2 or LT/RT fill from 0.00 to 1.00 to catch dead zones, jumps or a trigger that never fully bottoms out.

Open tool

Vibration motors

Fire the heavy and light motors separately, or run presets that make a rattle or weak motor obvious.

Open tool

Polling rate and latency

Time every report to get real Hz, jitter and detection delay for USB, 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth.

Open tool

Advanced Controller Tests and Diagnostics

Pressing buttons proves a pad works. These measurements show how well it works, with numbers you can compare after a repair.

01

How to Detect Analog Stick Drift

Put the pad on a table and run the rest test in the stick drift test. Healthy sticks rest below about 0.03; above 0.08 they can nudge a game camera.

02

How to Measure Controller Deadzones

Note the largest resting value of each stick, then add a small margin. The deadzone test shows the result before and after the deadzone is applied.

03

How to Measure Controller Polling Rate

Spin a stick and let the polling rate test time each new report. Treat the figure as a lower bound, as browsers may sample less often than the hardware.

04

How to Check Input Latency

The input latency test measures how fast the page notices a report, then times your reactions. Trust the median of several rounds.

05

How to Test Trigger Sensitivity

Squeeze each trigger slowly over two seconds. The value should climb smoothly, start moving early and reach a full 1.00 at the bottom.

06

How to Identify Unresponsive Buttons

Press each key ten times quickly. Missed presses suggest a worn contact; extra ones point to chatter, which the mapping log timestamps.

Online Tester vs Other Ways to Check a Controller

Each method has a place. This is what each one can show you without extra hardware.

Controller Testing for Different Situations

Buying a used controller

Ask the seller to connect the pad to a phone or laptop and open this page. Two minutes reveal drift, dead buttons and weak motors.

Checking a new controller

Factory faults are rare but real, and return windows are short. Run the full test on day one.

After a repair or cleaning

Compare rest values and trigger range with your earlier readings to see whether the fix worked.

Competitive gaming

Compare polling rate per connection, then confirm circularity and a small deadzone.

Emulators and PC games

The button mapping test shows the exact index of every key, so remapping is no longer guesswork.

Controller Troubleshooting and Fixes

Most controller faults have a simple cause. Try these quick fixes before assuming the hardware is broken.

Why Is My Controller Not Detected?

Press a button after the page loads. If nothing appears, try another cable, since many USB-C cables carry power only. Our not-detected guide covers the rest.

How to Fix Controller Connection Problems

Remove the pad from Bluetooth settings and pair it again. Keep it near the receiver and away from USB 3 ports, which emit 2.4 GHz noise.

What to Do When Controller Buttons Are Not Working

If one key fails, clean around it with isopropyl alcohol. If every key fails, close Steam or DS4Windows, which can take over the device.

How to Fix Analog Stick Drift

Spray contact cleaner around the stick base while rotating it. If drift returns, raise the deadzone or replace the module, as our drift guide explains.

Why Is Controller Vibration Not Working?

Rumble needs Chrome or Edge, as Firefox and Safari mostly do not expose it. Also check that Steam Input has not disabled it.

How to Resolve Controller Input Delays

Go wired first, then close apps that read the controller. Your display's game mode often cuts more delay than the pad itself adds.

How to Fix Incorrect Joystick Readings

Swapped or inverted axes usually mean raw mapping, so try another browser. A flat-sided range suggests a worn gate, visible in the circularity test.

How We Test and Why You Can Trust the Results

A tester is only useful if its numbers are honest. These are the rules every tool on the site follows.

Raw values, shown as reported

We display what the browser receives, to four decimals, before any smoothing. Deadzones are only applied where a tool says so.

Tested on every mapping

Each tool is checked in Chrome, Edge and Firefox with standard and raw layouts, including the Firefox DualSense order.

Open about limits

When a browser cannot read something, such as firmware or adaptive-trigger force, we say so instead of guessing.

Nothing leaves your device

Input is processed in your tab and never uploaded. Read the full method on our how we test page.

Which Controller Features Can Your Browser Test?

Browsers read controllers through the W3C Gamepad API. It is fast and private, but deliberately limited.

What the Gamepad API provides

Each pad reports an ID string, a mapping type, buttons from 0 to 1 and axes from −1 to 1, plus a timestamp. Chromium browsers add rumble.

Browser and system support

Chrome, Edge, Opera, Firefox and Safari read buttons and sticks. WebHID extras need a Chromium desktop browser. Firefox may use raw mapping.

What a Browser Cannot Test with the Gamepad API Alone

Gyroscope and accelerometer

Missing from the standard API. Our gyroscope test reads PlayStation sensors through WebHID.

Battery and firmware

Battery charge is available over WebHID for PlayStation pads. Firmware versions still need the official app or console.

Factory calibration

Browsers cannot read stored calibration. The calibration check measures centre and range instead.

Adaptive trigger force

Trigger travel is visible, but DualSense resistance effects need vendor commands the standard API lacks.

Controller Glossary

Stick drift
Input reported while a stick is untouched, usually from worn sensor tracks or dust.
Deadzone
An area around centre that games ignore. It hides small drift at the cost of fine control.
Polling rate
How often a controller sends its state, in Hz. Bluetooth is often 125–250 Hz; wired can reach 1000 Hz.
Circularity error
How far a stick's outer range strays from a perfect circle, as an average percentage.
Hall effect / TMR
Stick sensors that read magnets without contact, so they resist wear-related drift.
Standard mapping
The W3C button order: 0 is the bottom face button, 12–15 the D-pad, 16 the home button.
XInput / DirectInput
Two Windows controller interfaces. XInput gives the Xbox layout; DirectInput is older and more flexible.
WebHID
A browser API that talks to HID devices directly, unlocking touchpad, gyro and light-bar data.

Calibration and Maintenance Tips

Calibrate where you can

Windows offers calibration for DirectInput pads, and Steam Input has its own. Console pads such as the DualSense have none.

Keep dust out

Store pads in a drawer or case. Dust inside stick modules is a leading cause of early drift.

Look after the battery

Lithium cells last longest between 20% and 80%. Store an unused pad at about half charge.

Update the firmware

Updates fix Bluetooth bugs and input lag. Use the Xbox Accessories app, a PS5 or a Switch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is It Safe to Use an Online Controller Tester?

Yes. Reading a pad is passive, and rumble or light-bar changes are temporary and never touch firmware. WebHID only opens a device after you approve it.

Why Is My Controller Not Showing Up?

Browsers hide controllers until you press a button on the pad itself. If it still does not appear, try a data-capable cable and close apps such as Steam or DS4Windows.

Can I Test My Controller on Android and iOS?

Yes. Chrome on Android reads Bluetooth and USB-OTG pads, and Safari on iPhone or iPad supports Xbox, DualSense and DualShock 4. Rumble and WebHID extras are desktop only.

Does the Gamepad Tester Work on Windows, Mac and Linux?

It runs on all three. Windows supports Xbox pads natively, macOS pairs PlayStation and Xbox pads over Bluetooth, and Linux may need a udev rule for WebHID.

How Much Stick Drift Is Normal?

Resting values below about 0.03 are ordinary sensor noise. From about 0.08 you may notice a slow camera pan, and above 0.15 most players need a fix.

What Does the Deadzone Percentage Mean?

It is the share of stick travel, from centre, that a game ignores. A 10% deadzone means the stick must move a tenth of the way out before input counts.

Why Does Vibration Not Work in My Browser?

Rumble is supported in Chrome, Edge and Opera. Firefox and Safari expose little or no vibration, and some Bluetooth drivers block it, so try a USB cable.

Can I Test Two or More Controllers at Once?

Yes. Up to four pads can stay connected. Use the P1–P4 switch above the drawing to inspect each one in turn.

Does This Tester Fix My Controller?

No. It only reads inputs, so it cannot change firmware or calibration. It tells you what is wrong, and our guides explain how to fix it.
